With the nicer weather, the participants of the Toronto Brigantine’s Winter program are going to start re-fitting the boats for the upcoming shoulder season.
This coming weekend (April 15/16, 2011), the crews will be getting the boats re-rigging the boats.
The masts were left in this winter so no need for stepping the masts. But this is how it was done in previous years.
Here is a picture of the setting of the topsl yard from 1984. Look at the muscle and teamwork needed to make this happen.
Many hands make easy work …
… for all the variety of things that need to be done.
Julian Schroer and Sam Neale and their officers will be leading the re-rigging process for this year. …. its scheduled for next weekend. Stop by to check out all the action if you are around. The boats are berthed at Marina Quay West, on Queen’s Quay between Bathurst and Spadina.
Pretty soon the boats will be ready for the sailing season. If you were interested in booking a group sail training event this Spring you should call the office quickly … there are just a few weekends still available.
In addition to the training activities that they have to do, over 50 participants of the Winter Program have been coming down most weekends and school breaks for work parties on the boats. They have been working on any number of projects including patching the decks, sanding and painting steel and laying new wood, refinishing and replacing a fore-topmast, bowsprit, spindles and belaying pins, finishing up the Seamen’s Mess, working on some of the mechanical parts. That in additional to all the regular annual routine maintenance activities. The budget for materials for these projects (the wood, steel and paint) plus getting new sail, new engine parts, repacking the life rafts all comes to about $50,000 on top of all the labour effort volunteered. We are still accepting donations of cash and materials (like mooring ropes, wood and tools) to help make our $50,000 budget go farther. If you are able to contribute, do call the office or donate on-line.
Tax Receipts are provided.
